Autism Speaks

I watch them, words unspoken
Eyes glancing never there
Can feel the hearts are beating
The reaching out nowhere...

The screams that try an outlet
The smiles that aren't returned
Until a touch of "wonderful"
Released by something spurned.

Who knows the inner thoughts of
Who knows the feelings' need
A tickle here, some timing there
In capturing the read...

On faces as I ponder
Tomorrow's life to be.
Watching words unspoken
From actions that I see.

Really very well done Maureen
My daughter married a man who has an autistic son.
They manage quite well and love knows no boundaries.

Glad to see you doing such fine work. More like you are needed and I'm really serious when I mention that.

Thanks everyone~~ I don't think most know how much strength emotionally and physically goes into working with some children and I have a great admiration for those teachers.

( I was only substituting in that classroom this week.)

Sweetly penned, Maur.  You have my admiration and respect for drawing this sketch of an under-reported problem in the US that is only getting worse by leaps and bounds.

Maureen, I'm speechless! What a meaningful and highly touching piece of writing. Only someone of your caliber could reach these children and in such a special way. You're beautiful ~ as are they.

How fortunate are these children to have you in their lives and classes, dear Maureen.

I think this is really exquisitely profound.

This grabbed everybody where it needed to grab them, I think. Thank you for the beautiful poem and for the soul behind the person who wrote it.

I'm glad this one was brought back up, Maureen.  Quite touching... and deeply insightful in its pondering.

This really touched me, as well, Maureen.  It's not an easy condition to understand, that locked in self who can't come out as we do, who are considered normal. It is a frustrating problem for both the afflicted and those who love them, but love really is the key.  Thank you so much for sharing this.  I think someone (an adult)  close to me has a similar dysfunction, but has never been diagnosed. ~Karen
