in the Republik She smiled and looked into my eyes asking me, "What's behind me?" My eyes drifted from hers to see... nothing, nobody I said to her, quietly "I must've been looking through you" My eyes did not dart away from her to my knowledge but as we sat in the Jazz Republik, there were the occasional passerbys gliding by, eyes, just above the stairway wall as they moved slowly behind that wall, down the escalator to the metro, and those eyes of their's the expressions of those looking through the window they gazed to where we were, where we sat and their expressions seemed to say there's something going on in there that we were at a place they could not be expressions of bewilderment not curiosity and that that was what was behind you, my dear in the eyes all of those that have passed us by it was a look of a place they could not be it was, envy. |
