Penny Penny knew more, felt more then most children her age. A quiet girl who most times could be found sitting quietly, observing the adults in her life. She saw all the pain and difficulties of day to day living that a family endures. She saw the arguments between her parents about the bills and their jobs. She tried her best to understand. She watched as her brother’s anger festered in him until he took refuge in drugs and violence and lashed out at everything and anything in his way. Often at night, she would slip into his room to hold him while he slept, being careful to be gone before he awoke. Penny’s mother wasn’t a very bright woman. She couldn’t understand the complex emotional problems that Penny was having at such a early age. But what she lacked in smarts, she tried to make up with heart. She knew Penny didn’t smile as much as other girls her age and this bothered her greatly. She would hold her and rock her for hours and would tell Penny how much she loved her and how special she was. It just wasn’t enough. Penny’s father wasn’t a bad man, he never beat his kids and wife or drank their savings away with his buddies. He just didn’t care for children that much. He spent most of his time in his study, smoking his pipe, working on his thesis. Penny would sometimes just sit and watch him through the crack in his door. No, he wasn’t a bad man, but he was no father either. When Penny killed herself at the young age of 12, no one could understand why. Penny always knew more and felt more than most girls her age. This piece is dedicated to the ever rising problem of teenage suicide. Yoin |

Dear Tim, this is heartwrenching and a wise reminder for all to be there for the children, by listening and guiding them through the struggles of life. Such a poignant write. It is so sad that a child should put an end to his/her life while still budding. Thank you for this. Love, Margherita |

Thank you for your replies Margherita and berney. The world out there ritht now is a very very scary place for our children. they are having to make choices and deal with pressure at 12 and 13 that people my age had to at 18, 19. I almost lost my daughter to depression and doctors who were to quick to hand out drugs. She is doing fine now and just gave me a new grandaughter a few months ago. Yoin Just reworked my old poetry page. Check it out before geocities takes it down. Yoin |
