Night, bright with full moon is shining, enticing the children from beds to pull on mittens, coats, hats and scarves; layering up for the cold winter bright as day light night. Pulling sleds, runners rusted red, wood slats worn and rope handles frayed, out to the day-time road, night-time sledding hill. Sweet laughter rings clear. Voices bounce, excited, as bodies pile on on another, draping over the large sled, flanked by small sleds, guardians, perhaps scouts, which try to race ahead. Narrow runners scrape, skrate, skreet, shake and screech. Sparks fly, wind buffets and breaks, slices, pushes torpedoing, racing sleds faster, faster to side-swipe snow banks, careen and skitter. Eyes peer from under hats falling low over frosty brows, terror builds to crescendos of delightful release, shredding the night – moon shining bright as day, solitude broken by excited laughter. The chorus of pure-pitched voices shatter the silence of night into dawn. - Alison 12/31/09 [This message has been edited by Alison (01-01-2010 02:07 AM).] |

I've never lived where there was sledding, but I bought big round red discs for the kids when they were small to toboggin down the sand dunes. Now it has all changed for dirtbikes and fourwheelers. (One year the dunes were briefly covered with snow. How odd to see white dunes next to the ocean!) I can see the scene so vividly, though, in what you paint, hear the laughter and the yelling as they careen wildly, the snow taking on extra magic in the moonlight....everyone bundle up with cheeks the color of apples. How exciting it must be, especially durning the first heavy snows of the season! Thank you for sharing... ![]() Karen |

Dear Ida, Yann, Bobby, Margherita, Karen and Sharon, Thank you all so much for reading and enjoyng my poem. We had one sled when we grew up that we loved. He was old and rickety and his name was "Big Joe" (we named everything in our family). Big Joe could hold most of us kid if we tucked tightly against each other and he flew like the wind. No round sleds, inner tubes, or plastic trays could beat Big Joe. Love, Alison |
