"Progress" The past, it seems, is dwindling away And change is all around us, everyday Destroying all we loved and all we knew No matter what we try to say or do I scarcely recognize what used to be Those places where I'd go to be set free From all the constant chaos in my life My hideaways, devoid of stress and strife But ever-changing are the winds of Fate Especially, it seems to me, of late When all the fondest memories of my past Come crashing down around my heart at last And I have but a single wish, in truth: That they would stop this raping of my youth And leave alone those things I held so dear For at least another fleeting year September 23, 2009 AMdG "My candle burns at both ends; it will not last the night; but ah, my foes, and oh, my friends--it gives a lovely light!" -Edna St. Vincent Millay |
