Once as Icarus, I let it fly
And I named it freedom; and joy
But as with Icarus, it flew too close to another hearts warmth
And fell to the earth, abandoned and alone
Broken I found it again, and bandaged its wounds
Swearing an oath to God almighty;
Never again would I let my heart fly
For I was afraid

So, for many years did I build these walls around it
Disallowing any to approach; or even behold its nature
Denying it the comfort of another drawing near
And with me it stayed not daring to fly again
Safe and secure in its loneliness
And we were not afraid

But something changed
In time the wounds healed, and it wished to fly again
It beat at the walls I’d built and cried for release
But I coward at the thought of it falling again
Of it hurting again
In time the cries ceased, and I thought all was well
In remorse for my cruelty at denying its longing,
I climbed the wall to see
But it was gone; though the walls were high, and thick
It had flown away into the wilderness that had brought only pain
And I was afraid

Now, many years have past
And sometimes I see it, soaring against the back-lit sky
Faintly, I can hear it singing
It sings of freedom, and it sings of joy
Now and again it alights on my sleeve and shares its song with me.
Then as quickly as it came, it flies away again
And I wonder at its courage
For without thought of being broken; it sings
It sings of love and of freedom and joy
And its song is echoed as another joins it in flight
At last my lesson is learned
And I am not afraid

I saw this as thought it was on a screen before me.  The lesson alone in this poem is outstanding, as it is fear that keeps a lot of us from doing and being all that we can be.  This poem reminded me of when I was a child and fell on a horse, and broke my arm and leg.  Once it was healed my parents made me get right back on that horse, and I have been getting right back on those "horses" ever since.  My Dad loved and studied Greek Mythology so maybe he took a lesson from  Icarus, omitting the fatal ending.     Well done indeed.

Dear Father, Greek Mythology was my absolute favourite subject in high school ~ and I am still fascinated by it and have written a few poems myself on subject. ~ Mind you, none of them compare with this one! I LOVE it!!!

Thank you Myst, I am most gratified by your comments.
Memories like those are sweetest when filtered through time and yet their warmth is retained in fondness by gestures of kindness from those we love.

Many thanks Ms.Dowd. Then we share a commonality! I too love mythology and Aesop's Fables were a staple of my childhood. Thank you again for the comments, coming from one as accomplished in poetry as you are, it means a great deal to me.
