I stood outside the bedroom door where my young daughter knelt To say her prayers before she went to bed. I can't begin to tell you all the love and joy I felt To see her folded hands and lowered head. "God bless mommy. God bless Daddy. God bless grandma. Goodbye, Spot" Those were the words I heard my daughter say. How strange, I thought, to say goodbye to Spot, her favorite pet And Spot got killed in traffic that next day!!! The next night, once again, I crouched outside her bedroom door To hear the evening prayers she always said. "God bless mommy. God bless daddy. Goodbye, grandma" were her words. The next day grandma stroked and fell down...dead!!!! ![]() "What's this??", I thought. How could this be!? Some strange coincidence? Or did my daughter have some special sight To know when someone's time was up before they bit the dust And say goodby within her prayers at night? Next night I stood there once again to hear what she would say. I must confess my nerves were running high. "God bless mommy. Goodbye, daddy." No! It couldn't be!! My daughter's words meant that I was to die! I had a fitful night of sleep. I squirmed and turned and tossed, Had nightmares of my daughter's prophesy. I knew that I could take no chances on the coming day.. One small miscue could be the death of me! I didn't shave when I got up...no blade to touch my neck. I drove to work at just five miles per hour. I holed up in my cubicle and sat behind locked door And acted like a sniveling, little coward. Five miles per hour back home again I crawled at snail speed Unnecessary risks I would not take Because I knew that one false move, one silly little slip Could be the final movement I would make! Then, finally, I was back home, no serious mishap. My wife looked at me in a worried way. "Don't worry, honey", I replied. "It's great to be back home". "You see, I've had a real hectic day!" "YOU'VE had a hectic day??", she screamed. "It won't compare to mine!" "It's been the worst day of my life!", she said. "The milkman tripped on our front porch step when he happened by, Fell down and broke his neck and wound up dead!!!!" ![]() |

My mom was married to a butcher, but my dad was a milkman also, died the same way. I heard I had lots of brothers and sisters. Fun write. sadly, often times true. Tracey. |

You wrote that so well Michael, it's quite clever what you can do with an old joke. Have a great day my friend. Lindsay |

Apparently, It's a wise-guy who knows his daughter. If you don't mind a twist on the old saw. |
