I stood there, almost mesmerized,to watch his fingers fly, His hands creating miracles right there before my eye. A touch of red, a swipe of blue, some yellow, white and green The chalk created works of art like I had never seen. DaVinci in a tye-dye shirt held court for all to see, The sidewalk of a busy street his only tapestry. Oblivious to those who watched, the sidewalk artist drew As castles, kings and gardens sprung like magic into view. At last, the final line was drawn. The artist stood and bowed Receiving praise and dollar bills from his admiring crowd. I stood, applauding with the rest, at such a grand display Then grabbed the sidewalk artist's arm before he walked away. "Your work is great", I smiled at him, "A wonderful display" "But look! Storm clouds are moving in. The sky is turning gray." "Before too long a driving rain will turn your work to ruin!" "Don't matter none", the young boy said. "The joy is in the doin'". ..and, sure enough, the hard rains came and wiped the sidewalks clean. The beauty of the artist's work was nowhere to be seen. That night, beneath the covers, many thoughts ran through my head. I thought about my life and what the sidewalk artist said. My life had been a sidewalk mural, silhouettes in chalk, From all the things that I had done and paths that I had walked. Decision making, right and wrong, came slowly into view And all the things I hadn’t done that I had hoped to do. Relationships both came and went, some happiness, some pain. Some sections had been washed away by tears instead of rain. I thought of friends and family that left this world behind And how their passing left unanswered questions in my mind. Was there a point?, I asked myself, some everlasting worth To justify what I had done while visiting this Earth? The end result turns out the same, no matter what we’ve done. Regardless of our actions, we are here and then we’re gone. Achievements that we may have made will one day fade from view And everyone that we had known will follow that end, too. So what’s the point of happiness as something we can’t save But leave behind when it’s our call to slip into the grave? I searched for answers, lying there, to find a point of view Recalled the artist’s smile and how his agile fingers flew Creating masterpieces that were destined to be ruin And I found my answer in his words – the joy is in the doin’. |

I really enjoyed this and it speaks of truth. But you will be leaving so much of yourself behind for a lot of people you may never even know. It is in writing in places you may never have heard of. So you and your name and your words will be forewver remembred and not washed away. To that I say how wonderful it is that your art is putting it down on paper. latearrival |

Dear Mike, I don't know what you will be posting Wednesday or why. But you can bet your patootie that I will be watching. I do love this poem - I am part of what you will leave behind. You opened the door to a language I could read but not write. You helped me decode a puzzle that I am still learning to understand. Speaking of which, when you are better - I have two poems for you to look at in the PW. One is a correction under Write for me Quaternally - post # 49 and the other is under the Duo lesson. I have missed you lots. A |

Thank you Mike. This is exactly what I needed to read tonight. The joy really is...in the doin. You were born to be happy, and make others happy in the process. A wonderful addition to my growing Pips library. |

Michael you are an artist of another kind and you are so right - it is in the doin. I thought you may enjoy this from one of my bookmarked sites Sidewalk Art From Impact Lab And...I am crying already, as I have read "that one" so many times I know a lot by heart, that and the Widow's Walk, The Letters, and ... Well, you get the idea That was one of your best mind-searching ones - made me think once again about similar questions I ask all the time, and already knew the answer. Get better! |

Ohhhhhhh, Michael, Michael, Michael!!! I wish you could see how much I'm smiling over here. I took a moment to come and read, and here you are, in all your rhyming and cadence kissed perfection. What an absolute treat! The artistry of your words and stories never fail to leave me in awe. You are one incredibly talented and creative man. I loved the story and moral in this. Well done my friend. I guess there's no surprise how much I'm smiling here ... this was simply wonderful. Best wishes and hugs, /Kit |

This is a great way to look at life. The beginning reminds me of mary poppins My favorite line is the one comparing the raindrops to rain. It is so truthful that things wiped out of our lives involve tears and it is a great analogy. |
