Caught me a lamb in a muddy creek |

I went to swap some lambs, you know I'm breeding sheep, while putting them in the meadow, one panicked and took a leap, over the fence, oh my oh my, ran off into potatoe land and I just knew that very minute, I had disaster on my hand. Drove home fast to get some help, from Henk and my two dogs It's difficult to catch a sheep, that's hopping around like frogs. The land was big, the dogs too dumb, they said "that's not a herd, you want us to catch one little lamb? We think that's just absurd". When walking on potatoe land, you have to walk on hills and all that I can say to you, potatoeland? It kills. All the muscles in your legs, are protesting loud and clear, from taking steps too far and wide, stumbled more than walked I fear. The lamb took off to the other side, I took my van and drove around, onto the stubblefield beside, and soon again the lamb was found. He had no desire to be caught and wandered off to the shore of a creek, there he stopped and I closed in, in hope he was getting tired and weak. He stood there, calculating the odds, the dog was left and I was right, suddenly he turned around, walked into the reed and out of sight. I thought 'I got you little lamb, you've walked yourself into a trap', Ha ha, not yet, the lamb laughed loud, but I wished I had a swimming cap. He took a dive into the creek and without thinking I took one too, head first, like a perfect sliding and I grabbed him after a crawl or two. The creek was shallow, I tried to stand, but mud just clung to my boot, so I had to lay down, to lighten my weight and off we went 'en route'. Holding on to the horn of the lamb, I struggled my way to the other shore, scolding this beast "You stupid lamb, but I'm not letting you go anymore". A car had stopped along the road, a man and woman stepped out, Thank God, I thought, help's on it's way, "Please come", I shouted loud. Same time, the owner of the meadow, who had seen me disapear into the reed and not come out, arrived with some rope and gear. I handed him the little lamb and the other men pulled me ashore and there I stood, all dripping wet, with greyish black mud galore. In the back of the van they drove us home and I put the lamb in the barn Henk came too, he had missed all the fun, but suddenly I thought 'oh darn'. My van was still in the stubblefield, one dog inside, the other loose, picked it up, with boots full of water, which didn't look like apple juice. It appears my dog (who won't swim yet) still stood at the very same spot, where she had seen me take a dive and probably thought I had forgot that she was there, so she was howling and people were gathering 'round, trying to get her to swim across, but she preferred the solid ground. So that's what happened on September 12 and now you know that sheep can swim and despite the hard work and that muddy dive, I think we bonded, me and him. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Henk said: you're almost 65 years old my dear, shouldn't you better consider changing to breeding something smaller, like guinea pigs? Like scattered leaves...my words will flow [This message has been edited by Titia Geertman (09-19-2009 04:25 AM).] |

While I doubt you enjoyed your Sept. 12 at the time it was happening, I enjoyed the recounting. Nicely done. |

What a story! You best name this new sheep's offspring - Slippery Sam (or Samantha.) Henk is right, I am 65 too next year and feel every ache and pain there is these days, so why not try breeding ants? Loved it Titia, just the cutest story, even if it was at your expense. |

Wow, Titia! I am impressed by this adventure! In a way you, as well as the lamb were both stubborn! And it wasn't even the black one! Too cute! Love, Margherita |

Wow...that looks like quite the adventure. Luckily, when I lived with my grandparents, none of our horses did that. The most they ever did was take a stroll in the woods. LOL I enjoyed this story, and commend and admire you for your persistence. Thank you for sharing. Arana Darkwolf |
