Fire Storm There are new green shoots on the trees to see Although the bark is burnt and black, And a songbird calls to his mate somewhere And she sweetly answers him back. The earth is now damp where the gully comes down From the spring as the waters return, And maiden-hair peeps ‘tween the rocks by the creek And unfurled are the fronds of the fern. All around are sounds and signs of life As the bush is awakening at last, To hide the deep wounds & to cover the scars That shows where the fire storm passed. There’s a weary young mother with Babe-in-arms, Her sad face is all lined with care And her man stands by as his big heart breaks To see his dear wife grieving there. As they search through the rubble that once was home Before the night when the bush-fire came, But their love is still there & with courage declare That they will begin all over again. They fought side by side in a desperate stand Until the last of the tanks ran dry, Fire balls crowned in the tops of the trees And embers rained down from the sky. Wise decisions we make & precautions we take But the lessons are plain for all to see, It’s a way that was planned for this wide rugged land And I’m afraid that bush-fires forever will be. Now the Goddess of Flame is biding her time Until the bush-fires re-kindle in hell, Then she’ll strike, & man’s hand is a pitiful thing When the wild forces of nature rebel. Lindsay |

Very well done my friend...my son saw the hills burning behind his house in California several months back, and though he thought it an awesome sight, he said he had a lot of respect for the power he watched. Again...could see and feel this piece... j. |

Fire is such force of nature leaving very few pieces to put back together. Southern California is still recovering. May God Bless those who were in the path of the flames. Nicely done, Lindsay~ |

You seem to suffer a lot from these bush fires in Australia Lindsay, be they self-ignited or not ! A wonderful rendering of your thoughts around the problem in such a colourful and vivid way. Always a treat to read your poems dear friend. Katriona ![]() |

Dear Lindsay, this most beautifully written poem brought deep emotions. Your sensitivity is on display, as well as your poetic skills. The fires are frightening in their immense power! Just was close by one last Sunday and the smoke, sparks and ash in the air invaded the village we were visiting. They did succeed in extinguishing it, but only after great damage had already occurred. May people and their houses be safe in Australia and everywhere. I will never understand the criminal pyromaniacs, who often are the cause of immense distructions. Thank you for this highly significant write. Love, Margherita |

Lindsay, This is breath-taking. It moved me almost beyond words - I love how you write of new life and starting over. You don't dismiss the sadness of it all, but you write of hope. I think people all over the world can treasure your poem. Thank you for sharing it. With love, Alison |

Lindsay - I've seen the destruction of the Fire Storm here in British Columbia. Seen a whole town in the mountains mostly burned to the ground, just terrible... BC |

This one struck home, Lindsay. There have been some terrible brush fires here lately. 2 firemen were killed and 3 others injured and the sad part is, it was arson. At one point fires were burning all around us and, of course, it was during three digit temperatures. So it was pretty hot for quite a while but it has finally cooleed down a bit...until the next one. Ida |
