art by Janet K. Brennan, Royalty at Sweetgrass

High on the mountain he waited
for my gaze to meet his,
knowing that once it did we would be friends
should I stay my place above sweet- grass meadow.
.
Antlers twisted toward heaven,
copper velvet against turquoise,
he was the emperor north,
the king of the Sipapu;
conjurer of spirits.
There were none who could dispute.
For some had tried, failed
when the quite gaze of humanity
slipped into his world and hoped
for the trophy.
.
My heart was not mine that day
as I turned toward camp.
How holy that place he stood!
Had he followed?
Pain rushed just before numb
as I dipped my feet into Rio Pueblo.
Sweet exhilaration!
Would I see him again?
Eyes serene, a saint upon the hill,
elegance in his stride ,
while my own ached for the climb.
.
How I could have lingered under the solstice moon
to watch him dance!
But the sun hung low
and as night crept upon my being,
my eyes could no longer bear the beauty of the day.
I felt him close, standing in the river,
watching me as I had watched him,
praying we became friends
that moment on the mountain
high above sweet- grass meadow,
when my gaze met his.

How can this only have one reply! ~I loved the descriptions and beautiful skilled writing. This needs lots more attention. Also, a wonderful drawing to go with the poem.

Thank you guys and weicome Annie.

This poem is based on something that really happened when my husband and I were camping up at Sipapu NM.  Off in the meadow on the mountain we saw this most beautiful creature and I knew that I had to write about it.

Jan,

Thank you for taking us to the sweet-grass meadow with you.  What a beautiful animal you shared with us.  He is the king of his world - and a well deserved King he is, I am sure.
