Magic of the Bush Down the street the other day I ran into a friend from Seattle, We talked a while when suddenly a stock truck flew past us, whoosh, And as I heard the stock truck rattle, I could smell the scent of cattle Bringing fond memories back to me of walking in the bush. I remember in my early days of chasing wild cattle in the bush And been quite entranced by wild-life that were free to wander there, My Grand-dad was a nature lover and always bid me shush, Now all the wild-life that I saw I would like with you to share. The sun was warm, no sign of storm, the bush smelled crisp & sweet And as I breathed in the scented air I thought how lucky can I be, I thought of all those city folk hurrying headlong on city- street While here I was in tranquil mode enjoying every thing I see. White cockatoos with raucous calls flew noisily through the trees And warned all the other birds that a stranger loitered there, Other sounds came to me on that clean sweet scented breeze While galahs in shrieking multitudes were anything but rare. Walking silently through the bush I heard the alarm call of a plover, A clear warning to its mate that it was time to leave her nest, And further on a black- wallaby darts forth from out its cover, Putting distance in between us before it again lies down to rest. I crossed a tiny gurgling brook that soaked from distant hills, Then wended on its merry way towards a distant placid stream And any sad and melancholy feelings immediately it kills, Leaving me in a pensive mood where I like to sit & dream. Yes, the bush is a magic place that is difficult to compare, To any other pleasant place to lift your spirits up on high, For if you are feeling rather down and totally in despair, A walk in the bush will help you, it’s certainly worth a try. I have to agree - sounds wonderful. Do you really see white cockatoos here? Ok, you got me what is a galah? Great poem yet again Lindsay. To my very good friends Alison, Margherita, Ida, Mysteria and Kacy, thank you dear lady's for your always generous comments, It's what makes writing poetry so enjoyable. The Australian bush can be a magic place especially after a heavy dew or a shower of rain when the beautiful smell of eucalyptus leaves is so clean and sweet. White cockatoos of several varieties fly in abundance and the pink and grey galahs,(a member of the cockatoo family) can gather in mobs of several hundred birds. If any of you girls ever get the chance of coming to Aussieland don't let it slip through your fingers, you will love the Australian bush. God bless you all. Lindsay |
