I’ve put the kids to bed
Kissed them both goodnight
Told them you’d be home soon
Praying; please let it be tonight.

The loneliness surrounds me
As I falter to the floor
The beds been made for months now
Since the day you went to war.

The floor boards scream with silence
Echoing through my veins,
I wait for the sound of your footsteps
But the heartbreaking static remains.

My body grows tired
But my heart can’t help but wait
Wishing praying hoping praying
That this war is not your fate.

I peel myself from the floor
As begins another day
Fooling myself once again;
I tell the mirror:
I am okay.

Inside this exterior, over which the eye might have roved there was the record of a pulsing life, which had learnt too well for its years – Thomas Har

I hate to think how many women are waking tomorrow morning with these exact same thoughts.  I can't think of any more powerless thing that war.  A very well done and poignant poem.

Thanks heaps.  I agree, theres nothing quite as devastating as a war, and those left behind.

Lovely,

Captures that vain hope, strength and selflessness perfectly I think.
