It’s that time of year again That our nationwide unites We come together in crowds of joy And leave in blood drawn fights. Yes it’s time to commemorate This great country that we share A day under the microscope That should make us more aware. We gather wearing thongs and swimmers And a flag upon our back As if that somehow justifies The compassion we seem to lack. We see a lady in a headscarf Or a man with different skin And our narrow little minds Cause our consciences to wear thin. We think that Australia Day Is about being as Aussie as they come About drinking beer with our mates And showing the outsiders we’ve won. But did we ever stop to think Of what it means to be Australians? That caring for our fellow people Includes the ones we’ve branded aliens We pride ourselves on being Australian But look around what do you see? A country full of men and women Living in hypocrisy We’ve claimed that we’re a multicultural country We say we accept every race But we’re intolerant beyond ourselves In this nightmare of disgrace. So put away the alcohol We’re already blind in every way. I just hope I live to see a time When we can truly celebrate Australia Day. Inside this exterior, over which the eye might have roved there was the record of a pulsing life, which had learnt too well for its years – Thomas Har |
