A vice Is the incessant need Of wanting Or the continuous and habitual use Of narcotic substances It is a word That defines itself A word That captures its ugly image A word, that if smeared onto a blank canvass Would envelop it in emptiness It is the result of natural flaws Of humanity Of societies dead-beats Of opiate addicts, users, abusers The verbal definition of the mentally encaged Yet it is a word that plagues any caliber of mind Non-discriminate of wealth or intellect It is a word That whispers cryptic words of assurance Into the ears of injection needle wielders Who lull themselves into a chemically induced sleep It is this word That hides the rings of men Slipped casually into a back pocket In numerous bars It is ever present In the rooms of every brothel Of every back alley Of every underground red light district Pervading the mixed smells of cheap cologne and perfume As well as the lustrous cries of pleasure Above all It is a word embedded Into the minds of the human psyche Of the individuals Who are dictated by compulsion Collapsed, shattered The inevitable result of Vice. |

There are many vices, and many levels of sinning. |

Welcome to Passions first off This is a wonderful intro poem. There are like your second commenter said, so many vices, and not only do they bring down the person possessing them, but everyone they are in contact with. I wish it was not such a weakness. I also wish that the people that provide them means for most vices to continue were all behind bars. Great job on this. |

Imho the worst vices involve deliberate unjust harm to others. Those are the sorts of behavior that, as John Stuart Mill remarked, society as a whole has a real warrant to suppress. Such "mortal" vices include murder, attempted murder, terrorism and terroristic threatening, product tampering and criminal poisoning, unjust torture of any sort (not including spanking, thank you Dr. Spock!), fraud and theft whether isolated or massive in scope, destructive vandalism, deliberate and very cynical miseducation (especially of children), criminal conspiracy and corruption of government, felonious stalking, and all such similar crimes. As for the rest, permit me to quote folk singer Gordon Lightfoot: "Be calm in the face of all common disgraces, and know what they're doing it for." Welcome to Piptalk, jcata003! |

My apologies for being so verbose, but to the above listing should be added rape---as mortal a sin and ugly a vice as ever there was. |
