Birth of a Hero We see his mother in the stands As she sits with tense and clasping hands In silent prayer for her loved son And for the task that must be done. She pictures the small boy she knew Who early showed the skill that grew With hard work and determination Into a gift for his loved nation. Her small boy turned into a man Who is this tall Olympian, Spotlighted as the whole world watches With wonder as he wins all matches. Five golds in hand and three to go. Speed records fall, they're much too slow As he continues in the swim For goals that we expect of him. If he should capture number eight The world will honor him as great, Leaving his mom to mourn a bit For the boy who swam for love of it. Joyce Johnson 8/14/08 |

How insightful you are, Joyce. I think about sports in the same way sometimes. Ida |

Dear Joyce, I do agree with you. There is the never ending pressure on those champions, but of course the triumphs are never forgotten ... Very intense and insightful indeed. Love, Margherita |

Joyce, This poem is so poignant. I wish you could send it to his Mom - I bet this is exactly how she feels and your words would be such a gift for them both. Wonderful. Alison |

Okay ! The cyber-critters have been at work stealing my reply to this~ I DID reply yesterday evening, and it was a good reply too~ Where oh where did it go ? Well what the heck ... here I go again~ I wrote that he made it 8 !!! Geez, that's enough to make any mother proud and I know that his is~ He appears to be a nice young man and it is quite an accomplishment to even make the Olympics ... much less star in them as he has done~ I am proud of ALL of our Untied States participants ... and to those others from all over the globe, I wish them all well too~ I think we are seeing some FINE competitive games and I am so enjoying watching them~ Of course I'm a little bleary-eyed ... as I do like staying up late with them~ GREAT GREAT write Joyce~ Thank you~ *Huglets* ~*Marge*~ ~*The sound of a kiss is not as strong as that of a cannon, but it's echo endures much longer*~ |

Yes Joyce what a wonderful gift it would be to send this wonderful poem to his Mum. He is the greatest Olympian in history and I was thrilled to see him win his eight gold medals. And Joyce you wrote it so well. Love Lindsay |
