Dawn's breaking betrays a brazen haze where white clouds beguile, and in a while burnt sunshine unveils enormous swales, the wind beach-driven, land riven in two. So I mark the time in endless rhyme, the syncopated patter of expiring matter, but cold echoes return until I yearn for release and, oh, sweet peace. When sunset arrives, two different lives lead back to discover a familiar lover. Watch as shadows fly into the reaching night, into the dusk, the hollow husk of the dying day. If you came back to stay, what would I say to you, of dreams shared or how we fared apart? Where to start? How do I explain the emotion, a roiling, turbulent ocean surrounding me, pulling me, drowning me in time irretrievably lost, a frightful cost to have paid? If only you had stayed I might have found myself again. But you're gone, and I'm here all alone. So I sing this sad song 'though I know that it's wrong to hold on to a world that can never be. Still I want to believe, together, our lives had meaning more than a dream. |
