Working Man ( the truth of who I am ) Standing on my porch at midnight, My dogs swimming and wagging around my feet, eager to explode with pent up greetings, undelivered, but mindful of the routine of tobacco and silence. I reflect, I snap shot the day… everyday, Clothes and me, still sodden with toil, that evasive effluvium , that perfect second skin raining down hour after hour, grime becoming all that I am. I burned my body for the buck, my candle waxing one more drop. I am the middle man, the step between raw and complete, I do not see the beginning, nor savor the end, I dig holes in the desert, in a sandstorm. My life is balance. The gash on my left arm , in perfect harmony with the bruise on my right, blood and band -aids, I’m naked without them. I am a working man… not a work in progress. There are better songs to sing,I know I’ve sung them, fulfillment, respect, satisfaction, but they don’t have the power of love responsibility and survival. Standing on my porch at midnight, tobacco spent. I hum a little tune, which breaks into a grin, so I dance a little jig , with my dogs, and head for the shower. OLIAS. |

I enjoyed this very much, OLIAS, and the picture you painted with your words. Sometimes it's nice to think that one is "complete" but a work in progress I do believe we all are and forever will be. I believe in "forever", you see. Helen |

You might be a working man, Olias, but you are also a first class poet. Not a bad combination and a lesson for all of us. If you see a man digging a ditch, never assume that's all he can do. Ida |

A "Working Man" ~ an honest buck for an honest day's work! "I hum a little tune, which breaks into a grin, so I dance a little jig , with my dogs, and head for the shower." You have me smiling on the inside and the outside! It was wonderful getting to know you better, OLIAS!!! Standing on your porch at midnight! ~ I can see you in my mind's eye! Love the spirit of this write! Giving you a warm hug and a pat on the back! EA |

Olias, I enjoyed your poem. You are not JUST a working man. You ARE a working man (and there is a huge difference), and in every sense of the word, that is what you and every man should be, and there is honour in that. Your dogs, who know true value, better than any human, love you for who you are, and they love you - so there is the proof. Please give each of your dogs a hug from Auntie Di. - Owl |
