Winds are restless in the stillness
where the heat ripples low to the ground.
Like a salsa dance
staged on a blue mesa.

Matching step for step
hip to hip
plateaus and rolls
a slow shimmy across the desert floor.

A mirage of mirrors
smoothe as sandstone
polish the edges
and pick up the tempo
unrelenting.

There are no curtain calls
to soothe the sweltering
it hustles
at a fast paced allure
bringing the heat to a boil.

Pure and unadulterated
sweat rolls off the back
the salt serves to pepper
the natural beauty.

Cactus flowers compete with the sunset
painting the landscape
in hot pinks and canary yellow
for shock effect.

A desert garden thrives
planted firmly.
She gathers her skirts
looking back
remembering when
she turns her face to the wind.

Well, Bluesy,
That was a switch I didn't see coming. But the best part is that without any sea references it rocked just the same. Thanks for that.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

Blues-

Rhythmic and tactile, scented with desert breezes and spiked with flashes of color.  This makes me wanna dance! :-)

Hot it is, Bluesy!  It was a treat to see your name as I scrolled down, but this was extra-ordinary!  One of your best, I think.  May I be a copy-cat and agree with all of those who responded?  Tremendous imagery and analogy!  A keeper this is!

This is lovely, Bluesy!  Most descriptive and captivating.  Too late for me to dance the salsa but it is a delight to watch.

I lived in the desert for 18 years and your salsa dance brings back so many memories.  You deserve special kudos for this one.  Your imagery in this was quite well done and the whole piece just had a natural flow.  Count me in for a salsa dance anytime and the ending ...

It's all been said but I just wanted to add my note of appreciation.

Wonderful! Lived just outside Phoenix for a while and in Long Beach area of California. Spent a lot of time in the desert between and around the two -- this brought much of back in splendor....

Very much enjoyed touch here...

This was very interesting and well written! I loved it.

I used to know how to salsa.
