Leaves the color of dying embers dance to nature's floor Squirrels will read my footprints as the telling of my story Green fingers reach out trying to hold my clothes in their hands The trees whisper in a language I've forgotten how to translate Flying dust swerves into my eyes blinding me to the carnage before Can't bear for me to notice how the vibrant forest lost its glory Charred corpses of trees grieve for a loss I can't ever understand Green grass falls away into the pain of the forrest's blackened state Fires leapt to the sky competing for who could make the highest flame The sky burned with acidic tears of the forrest's breaking heart Heat crept in all directions sneakily at first overwhelming the defense Earth was tortured watching the the burning of fightless leaves Now, lone Coyotes howl a wild call to honor the battleground the land became Tall redwoods closed their eyes to the burning of their bark Pines prepared their roots for the fires and stood tall waiting in suspense Smoke taunted the birds who could only watch their homes burn in shattering defeat Even my puppy is still, feeling the pain living in each stick and leaf lying on the ground Ancient trees are gone forever, their survivors are little saplings born in wake of tragedy A cigarette was all it took to leave thousands of years in bark burning- their stories silenced Looking back at autumn leaves dancing in the air- vivid colors are a living tribute to this side Walking carefully through a graveyard of broken land- my hyper dog doesn't make a sound the earth is mourning for what it lost-the way you think of when you see an amputee Stumps broken by the fire staring at their healthy sisters face the flashback and wince Standing on this side of the border-void of new life its a solid reminder of all that died |
