A Card Game was the topic for our monthly meet.

                   A CARD GAME

A few of us were sitting round, all feeling rather bored,
Someone suggested a game of cards but he was totally ignored,
But we didn’t have much else to do and someone pulled out a pack,
“Let’s have a game of poker,” said my first cousin Jack.

“No, Euchre is a far better game,” someone else explained,
“No way,” said my cousin Jack, and he started to complain,
“What about a game of rummy,” it’s an easy game to foller,
Bill was really getting keen, he thought he could win a dollar.

Controversy held early sway so we put it to the vote,
Poker was the final pick and old Jack began to gloat,
“I’m always pretty good at this, I’ll beat you blokes for sure,
When I’ve skinned your pockets out you won’t come back for more.”

So five of us pulled up our chairs and cut cards to see who’d deal,
The thought I might win a bob or two certainly did have some appeal,
The cards were dealt around the group, all hoping for a straight,
Five dollars was the starting price and our pockets to deflate.

We all looked closely at our cards, while keeping poker face,
Summing up just what we had and accepting them with grace,
Some wanted two, some wanted three and one a complete new hand,
All hoping for a kitty win and our bankroll to expand.

Dollars five, Jack made his bet and someone raised it ten,
Another ten to take a look from my old mate Ben,
Two pair ace high, he threw them down, as eagerly he opined
“Not good enough,” Jack replied, “that won’t beat four of a kind.”

Half an hour of steady play, Jack winning nearly every hand,
It seemed strange to have such luck, did he have the whole thing planned,
I kept a close eye on the pack when it came Jack’s turn to deal,
I saw him slip a card from ‘neath the deck and his cheating to reveal.

“You cheating swine,” I yelled aloud, “you’ve been cheating from the start,”
And quickly pulled my hunting knife and stabbed him through the heart,
My blood pressure rose, I broke out in sweat and really felt choked up,
And then thank God the alarm went off and in great fright I woke up.

I lay there exhausted in my bed and thought, thank God it’s only a dream,
That I didn’t commit a family murder was a relief that reined supreme,
So next time a game of cards I play, I certainly will not gamble
Euchre will be my favoured game, I state that without preamble.

Yo LindsayP,

Poker pays better than washing windows.  It's more fun too.

I was picking up a point or two about how to play poker ~ and then.... Gosh, I knew
that I'd never play a game with you in case you ever got the notion that I'd cheat! ~ Which, of course, an 'angel' would never do.

Then you woke up and I let out a sigh of relief. Mind you, I knew it had to be a nightmare because you are such a sweetie pie!

Enjoyed your very tall tale!

Sweet dreams!
Loveya!

Now, this is a cute write, dear Lindsay! Enjoyed it. And how good that it was just a dream. Poker can become an addiction, I have seen that happen. So I guess your intention of playing a quieter game is probably good advice.

Love, dear Aussieman.
