The days of innocence are gone
But live deep in our core
Where friendships bound by simple truth
Abide forever more

For those who shared a childhood dream
And afternoons of fun
No matter what their lot, we cherish
Each and every one

No matter where they settled in
To start a life anew
We still esteem the friendships
Which remain sincere and true

For distance can’t destroy the past
Nor time erase the bonds
Nor pleasure nor misfortune fade
The memories clear and strong

There is no other friendship
Quite the same as those we knew
Whose shadow was the silhouette
Beside us as we grew

And were our hearts to meets again
The time would melt away
And distant summers would return
Like thoughts of yesterday

The memories lovingly remain
So deep within our hold
And so we celebrate the new
But still embrace the old

Yo dear Elizabeth,

Loads of happy childhood memories must be nice.  I've had a few.

Beautiful from the first line to the last and your cadence is "as always" kissed with perfection.  Very much enjoyed and I will now leave with some wonderful memories of my own thanks to you.

Oh!  This filled me with wonderful memories of my own.  And I see that it did that for other readers, too.

Great write!

love the cadence and the rhyme of this one...reads well out loud (and I love to read poetry out loud) but most of all I like the words...this stanza expresses good friendships so well:

"And were our hearts to meets again
The time would melt away
And distant summers would return
Like thoughts of yesterday"

Nothing can ever break that bond Thank you for sharing.

Well you sure have that right, I don't think I will ever get over loosing my childhood friend, BUT...I found you and that was a bonus.  Nice to see you write dear Lizzie.  If you see my muse hiding in any of your trees, you give her heck and send her home okay?

We moved around a lot when I was little so I didn't get to make many of these kind of friendships but I remember a couple of childhood friends fondly and wish there would have been more. I enjoyed this very much.

Such a beautiful door you've opened for us... to step through to our own memories. Wonderful work!
