"It wasn't like that."

I heard that.

The man's voice
straining to be heard
through clenched teeth
the final word
was begging for the fight.

It wasn't?
I was answering
him, eavesdropping not absently
on their conversation held
there in the next booth.

Nothing.

Then I heard him say,

"Yvette--don't look at me like that.
Please, don't look at me at me that way,
I can't stand it, stop that pain--"

"Oh."

and that was all she said.

That was the whole of her reply.
It did not confirm assault.
Just acknowledgement. An "oh"...
and in it was a tale of woe,
preceding her apology:

"I'm sorry it was not enough."

"You see? You're doing it again. I didn't say you weren't enough."

Silence, answered him.

"You always think it's about you..."

I stifled a laugh, listening.
The sound of ice cubes tinkling
were echoes of a last laugh laughed:

If she were me, it might have been,

but instead she quietly

explained that her reply was short

because she didn't care for sport

of conversational reviews

in restaurants and how she'd choose

a place that had more privacy

and a few less forks and spoons.

"Oh--" was not surprise but meant

that she'd been expecting it.

The waiter came and her voice sent

a calmitive unto my nerve:

"I would like the lobster bisque,

with Ceasar salad as the side

and oh, please bring me some hors d'oeurves?

Mushroom caps...does that say that?

Pardon, for I am not Francois--

I'd like a bottle full of that"

I heard her tap her glass and laugh

before she sighed and told him "oh"

"and whatever else he needs"

the waiter bowed and said "indeed"

as her gentleman, her date

left the table in a rage.

The waiter he picked up the plates,

saying, "you've no need of that."

"Oh." she said in sweet reply,

"then bring to me some crab claw too--

with sauce upon the side."

Your eavesdropping is very intriguing, dear Karen. One round won.

You are a treat!

Excluding the divinities (Martie and Maree), I can count on one paw the number of poems in Open I've wished would never end. This adds another. Ty.

such kindness, always from Margherita. You are truly somethin' special.

and wow moonbeam, that made me downright swoony, and I'm delighted to know that we share worship of two of the mightiest goddesses of the quill that I know. I blush.

Roneice? I was just thinking that I'd love to party with you someday. You seem like so much fun.

Thanks gals (and guy? Moonbeam? I dunno--sheesh) *laughing* It's okay though, I love androgynes too.

I'm gonna go hug my bed.

An early g'nite to everybody.

Eavesdropping is VERY interesting indeed, although it's not the best thing to do, but I have to admit I have done it myself LOL shhh

I fell in love with a lady's blog that was devoted entirely to eavesdropping. Sadly, it's gone now.

But AW? There's a few choice snippets from some folks who visited there, right here in Pip--
/pip/Forum29/HTML/002123.html

sigh...I miss "inpassing".

And yanno? *shrug* I made this one up.

Although I once had a very weird situation when my husband I had dinner in an Italian restaurant, and there was only one other couple in the dining room.

They had an intensely personal argument that actually ended with the woman tossing her drink in her companion's face.

And I thought that sorta thing only happened on tv...but it occurs to me that television is probably the maternity ward of much bad behavior.

Thanks for reading this--I enjoyed writing it. I do actually enjoy writing when I can make it up.

OH!

Eavesdropping.

I do so much adore this pastime myself.  But look, I read your comments ... you made it up?

Hahahaha!

No matter, it was still a delicious read!

Hahahaha!

I read the other day but couldn't do so properly (ohhhh shiney thoughts get in the way)..
so I came back today to read again...

and I love this...makes me want to do a eaves dropping of my own mind...but don't suppose anyone would read that.

Love you!
