It’s a cold and wet October night.
The settlement house is closed up.

Mom’s got a new man in the house.

The new man is crazy.

You can never tell
what he might get up to.

Bones is sitting in the rain,
leaning up against
the settlement house wall.

He’ll just sit there
until they get drunk enough,
and fall asleep.

Then Bones will sneak back in the house
where at least it’s warm and dry.

Bobby

Very impressive realism, dear Bobby. Can't be read without wanting to reach out and protect that child from his own harsh world.

Thanks dear Margherita,

I'm pleased this poem had that effect.

Bones says "Yer a nice lady."

I believe Bones, because he never lies.  He's like my oldest boy that way.

A drunken lifestyle and a new boyfriend can cause a child a lot of misery. I've seen this senario up close and personal.

Thanks dear Ida,

You are correct.  The boyfriend hates the kid, and the kid hates the boyfriend.

I've been there myself.

I went to bone's funeral,  Is this his dream or his ghost?  Now you've got me hooked.

Yo WTBAKELAR,

I tend to write my poetic novels scattershot, then organize them into a book.  Bones comes and goes all over the place.  He always was one for getting around.

This is understated, true-to-life, and enough to make anyone cry.

Thanks dear Nan,

Don't cry for Bones.  It's experiences like this that turned my friend, the "real life" Bones into the good, hardworking, family man that he is today.

Love Bobby

I fear that I would not like Bones' life...but I do enjoy your writes as they dispassionately pull you in to the passion of his life...intrigued
