I remember as a little girl My dad was such a significant part of the world He was there through all the tears and frowns And there to pick me up when i was down. We loved watching "Legends of the Fall" And dancing to "Butterfly Kisses" which was our song. I remember when he used to sneak me cookies when mom said no Until mom found out and said no more. My Father was the first best friend I had ever had And in my eyes he was the number one dad But what i found out soon was that being the best wasn't enough They took him before I could even express my love. I remember that horrible night When every time I closed my eyes I saw his face I remember wondering why But I understood the following day. The following morning I awoke to sunshine It was so bright that when i looked it hurt my eyes. So I went about my day like always I could just tell it was going to be a good day. When I arrived at my grandma's everyone was full of fear There was a stigma in the air that was really unclear. At the sight of my mother I began to feel afraid And as the words fell from her lips my life had completely changed She held her head down and said," your dad's dead". And as my heart broke the tears began to shed. Brace your self for the story that changed my life And understand that yours can change as well with the drop of a dime. He was doing his job, driving his cab Only 4 hours to go, I'm sure he was glad It was 1:30 am and he was sent to a home Where he picked up 2 boys who appeared to be alone When they reached their destination, thats where everything went wrong These boys planned to rob him But didn't take the money and be gone. it turned out it was planned As the getaway car followed shortly behind I can't imagine what was going through my dad's mind As the 2 boys in the back of the cab held a gun to his head Pulled the trigger and left him there dead. My father's life came to an end And I no longer have a best friend. These boys decided his fate October 30th, 2007 was the date. Now there's a wife whose lost her husband A son growing up without his father Two daughters with no one to walk them down the aisle Two grandchildren who will never know their grandfather A father whose lost his wife now his son Two siblings who no longer have their brother And many grieving a friend. My family is now broken because there's an important piece now gone And 6 kids I hope pay for what they've done. ~Courtney~ |

This is a very deep and moving poem with a story delivered in a straightforward manner. There are no frills, just the facts. That's what gives it such impact and makes the reader stop and wonder what it must be like to be in a situation like this. It must have been a harrowing experience to tell the story, Courtney; to relive the experience. Well done for having the courage to share this and I am sure that you will acquire a new world on PiP from people who will read your words and even help in any way they feel able to do so. From one comparatively new member - welcome to PiP. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Dylan Thomas |
