Autumn in Appalachia My roots run deep among the ghosts and rocks of these woods and ancient hills, where moon and sun rise from the very stones, (with the sound of their most profound silences) sweeping clean a thousand valleys and all the scars of life and love so the wounded soul may still walk in steadfast dignity, that ever more desolate road into Winter… mid the flickering, frost-edged moonbeams and shadows of such a fine Autumn night. --- b. e. adams (8/31/08) [This message has been edited by secondhanddreampoet (08-31-2008 05:47 PM).] |

You certainly show an affinity with your surroundings in this poem bringing a whole landscape to life. |

Often when reading your artful writing, Poet, lines of a Delmore Schwartz poem spring to mind: "What am I now that I was then?/ May memory restore again and again/ The smallest color of the smallest day." You do that for us. You continuously restore the smallest color of the smallest day in a way that brings to our attention the significance of each earthly essence and sensation and the pulse of the natural world. In this especially finely written work, you've put yourself in the picture first (unusual for you, I think?) underscoring the importance this magnificent part of the world to you specifically, and inviting the reader to share it. Bruce, you do so much with so few words, and paint landscapes that Kincaid would marvel at! Bravo! |

You make me feel as if I have been to Appalachia (where my father's family came from) though I have never seen it. Ida |
