Dressed for cold and lying on the lake I clear away snow from the surface of glass To stare into the flat planet of gray That separates me from the world below Bubbles miraculously halted mid-rise A perfectly positioned leaf on display Mysterious flecks of who-knows-what Mixed with fragments of algae and sand Gazing intently into the microcosm I wait for it to speak, and finally... I feel the groans and otherworldly sounds Of the shifting, breathing, living ice. |

You have captured the essence of the winter lake. I have a camp on a lake and spend a lot of winter nights there. I have heard the lake moaning in the middle of the night as I lie in bed or as I take a walk in the darkness. Thanks for sharing this. regards, shirtless poetry podcasts, blogs and[ photopoems at URL= http://anthonyarmstrong.ca |

shirtless, thank you. When I was a kid I used to lay on the ice like that all the time where I lived. Occasionally a snowmobiler or ice fisherman in a car or truck would drive by, and slow down to make sure I was OK. They must have thought I was kind of a weird girl, but the lake fascinated me. TomMark, thank you for the kind words. |

I can totally relate to this captivating write. There is great fascination in the transformation of water in winter. I remember always hoping that it would be cold enough so that MY lake would freeze and induce us to go skating. If I concentrate I can still hear that kind of sounds. Greatly enjoyed. love Margherita |

Thank you JamesMichael and Roniece. It really is like staring into a different world. Margherita, I don't know where you live but would have been glad to share some of winter's cold for your lake! :-) Your comments reminded me of a very cold Thanksgiving many years ago when the lake we lived on froze solid. There was no snow yet, so my siblings and I skated around the entire lake - it is one of my favorite memories. [This message has been edited by MJ (02-28-2008 05:42 PM).] |
