Empty vase on an unset table, Dimness fills the shuttered room, Crystal washed and put away, Silver shined in darkened drawer. She enters with feathers reaching where able Removing months of dust and gathered gloom, Curtains now pulled lets in the fine summer day Light washes where dark stained before. White linen underlies the gold rimed white A simple pattern yet an elegant design Carried over in the sterling silverware, And the crystal is equally fine. All is prepared for fancy dinner that night, Except for the empty vase that still sits there. Gloom |

So, what's the expectation? That the fine dinner is set to be laid out, and flowers will indeed be coming...along with the guest... Enjoyed the imagery, Professor! [And yes, I'm a terrible hoptimist... ] |

I am seeing a 'what once was' scene unfold. The fine dishes and silver are not on the table. The empty vase cries of neglect. No one is expected, no one will be coming. This plays like the scene of a room after its occupants are gone...for good. A fine somber write, Professor. |

I read this much the same way that Kacy does with the feeling that "the flowers" may be on a grave. What ever the true meaning, it is an exceptionally fine poem. Ida |

I read lonely. Perhaps an old woman who once had people to share time with - when meals were events, maybe parties. Now it's like the music is playing but there is no one to dance with. And the vases remain empty. A |

Wonderful scenery, I read anticipation ... the light is there, crystals and silvers shine, white linen sounds of freshness, new beginnings ... the flowers will come ... Love, Margherita |

The only thing missing visually were those darn flowers. |

. . . and the people, Mysteria, and conversation and love - between man and woman, family, friends - and the garden outside. That empty vase - perhaps it is serving as an urn for somebody's ashes, perhaps she doesn't think about the fact that there should be flowers in it, perhaps the metaphorical flowers have gone out of her life, perhaps Professor Gloom is using it as a symbol of the absence of life, colour and the senses, perhaps it is something else. A most effective poem. - Owl |
