WHEN A POET SPEAKS
16 June 2008

When a poet speaks,
those who
know,
stop the world
and listen
with their soul
and their bones.

Not a whimper of an argument Diana...not
a one...  The title drew me in like bees to
honey.

well said!!

...too bad it is likely an ever-dwindling few who 'know'...

Applause for this 'penning!'

Thank you Garapan.  I am honoured that you find my poem a treat.

Thank you, Margherita.  You honour me by calling me a poet.  But wow, I sure do listen too when you speak your poetry on these hallowed blue pages.

Thank you Magnus.  I am glad you felt and enjoyed my poem so much.

Thank you Bruce for understanding.  Yes, it is sad that there are fewer and fewer people who 'know'.  I am probably opening a can of worms now, but I believe that many, many teachers are to blame for part of that.  When I taught, it was my delight to try to imbue my pupils with the love of poetry by exposing it in all its beauty, power, sensitivity and life-blood.  I believe that I succeeded with many if not most of my pupils.  There are, of course, I am sure, many other reasons for the dwindling of an appreciation of poetry.

However, one view is that poetry is so special because it is out of the ordinary, and therefore not everyone likes it or, for example, does parachute-jumping.

One way of spreading poetry, in my opinion, is to understand that poetry is a kind of music and one can reach people through the universal language of music, so one can bring poetry to the people step by step through music e.g song lyrics and rap (and rap can be good) and people's poetry (and there are many excellent people's poets - Jacques Prévert, for example) and then eventually to all genres of poetry or as many as possible - but I am rambling now.

Thank you ILoveRain.  By the way I love rain too!

I consider myself to be learning to listen with my soul... kind of a later start, but better later than never!     Beautiful words, Diana.

Thank you Debby.  I have found, in my experience, that we learn so much more, and better and more deeply, and it is so much more fun/pleasurable/rewarding - the older we are when we start.  You know, Debby, very few people ever learn to listen with their soul, and that is so sad.  I am so glad that you are learning to do so, and thus enriching your life so much, by being one of those few.

I'm glad you think so, Yann.

I love your poem, "What Still Delights Me" that I have just read and responded to.

Diane, a public thank you for responding so to my niece, Deb. A wise reminder to us all, to listen with our soul...

yours...shines brightly.

I've always enjoyed your works, whether I've responded, or not!

I certainly listen when you speak, Diana.
We poets need to stick together. I think the world needs us more than ever before.

Thank YOU Karilea.  It really was my pleasure.  And thank you for your very kind words.  You make me feel very honoured.

You, too, Linda.  I am speechless.  Thank you.  I am overwhelmed.

And you too, Ida.  Thank you.  You are so right, and so wise - it is people who make or break the world - and it is their minds who rule what they do -  and it is words that affect their minds - and the most power-packed words are poetry.

Dear Diana,

The real trick is to hear the flow
of wind’s verse whether we’re
moving or not, yes.

You are amazing!

Some would say
that poetry is,
the bones
of worlds soul.

And you are the poet
Dear one
That I would stop the universe
To listen to

Richy, as always, your words blow me away - "to listen to the wind's verse whether we are moving or not" - "and poetry is the bones of the world's soul" and that you would stop the universe to listen to my poetry - I can't be much of a poet, because all I can get out is "Wow!"
