The Long, Short Summer When April’s May brings temps of 90 and higher and one swims through liquid air at 6:00 a.m., one wonders if summer will ever be over, or if dry leaves will ever whisper their silent begging for rain. When June knows that July will be nothing but scorched earth and dry dust from hell’s furnace, knowing August will allow no relief other than to linger longer than usual, that’s when you call it a normal summer. But… when a Camelot summer comes, with cool mornings and tempered days; oh, some wind is to be expected, of course, after all, it’s Kansas ~ but overall, even katydids are quieter and lightnin’ bugs are languidly lazy because nothing is normal now; And April’s May blinked with tears in her eyes when the Gods who threw tantrums broke open their night skies all the way into June’s path, which is now nearly at the end of her road… dare one wonder of July’s mysteries yet to behold? Even summer’s solstice was a long, short day, when an anniversary passed after twenty-eight years, vetting an ever guessing of what was to come ~ even now… especially in a Camelot summer… realizing only now that the long, short summer will be remembered, if only because the whole of it was outside the norm. ~*~ © KRJ 6-23-08 |

"or if dry leaves will ever whisper their silent begging for rain" - that is lovely. And I believe trees tell us things - but never thought of the dead leaves from trees telling us things... until now. "dare one wonder of July’s mysteries yet to behold?" - oh yes, one dares to wonder. But I have to ask, what is the 28 years???? Your lines flow so smooth, Aunt K. I have yet to learn that, so I guess I will just have to read much, much more of your stuff! |

"And April’s May blinked with tears in her eyes when the Gods who threw tantrums broke open their night skies all the way into June’s path, which is now nearly at the end of her road… dare one wonder of July’s mysteries yet to behold?" ahhh...but MommaK...the dream, the mystery...keeps us waiting and wanting for more yes? PLEASE forgive me Karilea. As much as I am fond of you, and as much as I don't want you to suffer, dare I say I am glad that Kansas has had such a summer, because without it, we wouldn't have had this masterpiece! Please believe me that I really am apologetic for feeling this way, but I don't regret it, if that makes any sense. Your poem was so macrocosmically and microcosmically explicit that you had me craving to be in Kansas, gasping for air, begging for rain, and sadly missing the celebration of katydids. Thank you. - Owl |

Dear Sunshine, I wish you many Camalot Summers. I'd like one here in Philly, where the city really becomes part of the steamy Delaware River. We boil, but it's part of the city we all love. Love Bobby |

Karilea, you write some of the prettiest poetry. You've not only captured those lazy days of summer, you've captured the moments and brought them to life. This was a pure delight! |
