I Like … I like wildflowers and hay fields growing high, tall spruce trees in groves with magic moss covering their roots. I like sunny skies and hard rain showers with thunder rumbling high overhead as lightening flashes. I count – one, two, three, four, and hope it is far away. I like liking things. Like camping with a bottle of brandy tucked in my back jeans pocket and fire sparks flying high. I like hearing the tide crash onto the sand when I am held close, breath on my salty cheek. I like spending quiet nights at home, writing, reading, country music playing on the radio and dogs at my feet. I have grown up, but I still remember the thrill of lunch pails, new crayons and school books that had never been opened. I love fall frosty mornings, lacing coffee with Carolans and having nowhere to go, just watching the creek flow and hearing a fish jump in the morning silence. I like the quiet of the day with no cars, planes, crowds or agendas to complete – just quiet times watching the ducks and looking for fox on the island or seeing a bird’s nest nestled in the rose bush with four blue eggs and a nervous Mama. I like to talk fast and I like run on sentences . I like to laugh loud from the tummy up to the mouth and I like nights like these, dancing with my thoughts. --- Alison |

Oh, Alison, and I like, I like, I like AND I love (and like and love are 2 different things) this poem. I think it is my favourite of yours that I have read. I could be wrong, because I can't think of them all at once, but I believe that I am not. It reminds me of a poem by Robert Frost - can't quite remember what it is called, but it was also a list of things that he loves. In spite of this being a list, it is stunning. By the way, I went back a second time to check that I was right, and I like and love all the things you listed too - except that I don't like brandy (prefer wine); I don't know what lunch pails are, but they sound good; I don't know what Carolans is, but I guess it is whisky, which I don't like as a drink, but I have had some sort of alcohol in coffee which I guess must have been whisky and it was lovely, but all the rest are my favourite things - or would be if we had them here - we have jackals and wild dogs, not foxes, but I love all animals anyway. My favourite part - and that is a difficult one! - oops, no, I keep changing it every time I go back and read it - my favourite part is ALL of it. Thank you for such a wonderful experience, Alison. It is not just wallowing in each of the lovely things you mentioned, it is the mood - no, more than the mood (but that too) - also the mindset and the character/personality trait - and I, too, like liking things - I think that was a magnificent thought of yours. - Owl |
