         The Meaning of life

It is just on three score years and ten
Since I took unto me a wife,
It certainly changed my attitude
As to the true meaning then of life.

Throughout my adolescent years
Fun always played the biggest part,
With sport and hobbies to the fore
As well as problems of the heart.

But slowly as one older grows,
One’s values start to change,
You realize what matters most
Are many things no longer strange.

Good health must surely top the score
With happiness close in second place,
A spouse to share your life what’s more
And all your problems help erase.

We are so lucky in this great land
Where we live a life that’s free,
One can’t but start to understand
The tragic life of the refugee.

We’re much too complacent with our lives
And take far too much for granted,
If refugees could share just some small part
They would think their life enchanted.

If they could all in freedom live
Away from starvation, tyranny and strife,
I’m sure like us they’d all understand
The true meaning of free life.

Dear Lindsay, you are a man who speaks from a grateful heart ~ and quite eloquently, I might add!

"We’re much too complacent with our lives
And take far too much for granted,"

Alas, that often be true.

With love to you and your wonderful wife of so many years.

Your wisdom is right on the mark, and your words are very true.  This excellent poem is well thought out and put together.

Lovely poem! I often think of this as well, living a blessed life while others suffer so.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
