Angelo’s turned twenty-one.
  That makes him a man.

He gets himself a girl
from off the corner.
Her name is Mary.

They’re in love.

Sally and Felix
watch the kid close,
for any strange disappearances
for extended periods of time.

One night Angelo
doesn’t show up at home.

They find out he’s slept the night
on the couch over at Mary’s place.

Sally turns to Felix and says—
“We’ve lost him.”
Felix just shakes his head yes.

Awww, it's so sad but we never really grow up and move on.  We just become bigger babies!

Well, you still have three others and the prospect of grandchildren.

Thanks dear Ida,

This poem was written about when we lost the youngest.  His wedding reception is coming up June 1.  It should be a blast.  He and I have always been very close for some reason.  I'm happy for him, he's married a wonderful girl.

They are still close, and the grandchildren are great.

Ah, the "sweet sorrow" of parting! You've captured the emotion with profound simplicity---the "stuff" of good poetry!

The inevitable is always tinged with sorrow. The letting grow is easy, the letting go is the tough part.  Wish your son the best.
