A handful of rice
   for a hungry belly;
or a gallon of bio-fuel
   for a thirsty car.

Which will
the conscious choose?

More importantly...
why must we choose,
when we can fill both needs?

Midnitesun,

I choose the rice thanks.  People need to learn to walk again.  Shoot that damned car.

I vote for the rice too.  Why do so many people need to drive SUV's and 4-WD's when they never leave the interstates?  If I can downsize where I live -- dealing with limited visibility, icy roads, large animals (can you say 'moose' before you hit one?) ... I have to ask, if we scaled down to small cars and drove conservatively - maybe we wouldn't pay so danged much for gas.  Dunno -that is about a political an answer as I want to give.

It should be obvious I would choose rice.
I believe there is more than enough land as well as manpower available to do both.
But for the greedy speculators to focus on fuel at the expense of food is an unforgiveable travesty.
Thank you each, for reading and offering your thoughts.

people are giving up many things for the price of gas

Kacy - Yes, in a perfect world all needs are met.  We too face high petrol increases and there then follows a food price increase and so it goes.  Perhaps we've gone so far beyond ourselves that to turn back to walking and growing our own food is just not an option.  I have a son who is on that path and I wish him well from the bottom of a heart that perhaps has suffered at the hands of progress.

Hello Midnitsun, I don't share your optimism that we can do both...I think we must produce rice or corn for feeding the world and find other solutions for the cars...There is so much trouble with these damned cars...

  have  a nice day

Walking is good for the heart, in many ways. And growing our own food is best when possible.
I see acres and acres of grass and pure 'ornamentals' and envision food crops for pollinators and people.

Hi, good question. There was no need to utilize corn to make biofuel, thats one thing I know, I have seen so many stories and documentaries on better ways. And now people are starving because of the increased price or lack of availability of corn. I don't quite know why the rice shortage in some areas. All thigns considered though, we were better off before cars.

catalinamoon, what a surprise.
Yes, it seems in our effort to reduce our petroleum dependence we have managed to set off waves of starvation in other countries, where thousands who have no need for bio-fuels when many have no cars and now, not enough food.
Will humans ever get it right????

Well Kacy, It seems we never learn, after the last time we had to wait in long lines and pay ridiculous prices for gas, people quickly forgot about it and started buying Hummers or any other gas hog they could get their hands on.

There are alternatives that would allow to meet all the needs, but once again the interests of a few are considered priority.

But it is with a change in the way of thinking that we can change reality and your write (and many of your writes) contribute to steer humanity in the right direction.

Significant!

Love,
Margherita

Yes, the struggle between the have-nots, and the, will-nots is only getting worse. I wish I could say I was overly optimistic about our future as a whole, but I can't. A glint of hope, is all I have left, for the next generation, without us, to find, and implement some tangible solutions. It's not like we have so much to lose, just our existence, that's all. So nice to read you again Kacy, I'm glad you're still here. Rich

Bluesygal, how nice to see you!
Thanks Martie, Richy, James, Bruce, John.
The world has more than enough land space and natural resources, as well as people power to satisfy all the world's food and energy needs.
We just need to collectively make a serious honest commitment that $$$$$$ should not be the main focus.
