Anzac Day It was in back 1914, on that day so long ago When our soldier boys went off to fight a war, It was a certainty that no way could they know Just what tragic chaos was waiting on that shore? It was with a surge of pride they eagerly answered the call To fight for our freedom and keep our country free, Fighting in conditions that could only now appall, They were ready and willing to take on the enemy. They joined up in their’ thousands & trained hard to fight, Before crossing the ocean, although knowing not to where, They stood proud in their uniform both black man & white, Ready to defend our freedom in that foreign Turkish Lair. At Gallipoli they landed & were confronted by the Turk, Who were waiting in their trenches high up on the hills, The Aussies and Kiwi’s no way would they shirk The battle that now faced them, tho’ so many men were killed, The bullets and bombs rained down in great precision, As upwards in battle with great courage now they fought, But the Turks too were brave and stuck to their position And most tenaciously they tried this savage attack to abort. Trench by trench they forced the Turkish soldiers back, In a savage battle that raged on now for weeks. Hundreds from either side died valiantly in their tracks, And lay dead & dying in the trenches and the creeks. After months of bloody warfare & a terrible loss of men, Where so many soldiers gave up their life to keep us free, The likes of those soldiers we may never see again, For they were all brave hero’s who fought for our liberty. On the twenty fifth of April of every year since then, We honor those brave soldiers for we are ever in their debt, Those Hero’s known as Anzacs, a valiant group of men, We all should pray on this Anzac day, ‘Lest We Forget’. I've learned a lot from reading your poems, Lindsay. It is always better to learn from someone who has actually lived what they write. Ida |
