Felix and Wawa,
they hate school.
Hey now, don’t we all.
It’s no fun at all.

They’re sitting in the back row
of ninth grade Civics.

They’re bored to distraction—
but they have a plan.
The door to the room stands open.

They wait until the teacher
turns his back,
to write something
on the blackboard.

They dive fast for the door.
Wawa takes his lunch bag along.
It’s near lunch time,
and the teacher is hungry,
he doesn’t care that much anyway,
about kids escaping from his class.

Felix and Wawa know where
there is an open door
in the dark,
and deserted auditorium,
they open it,
and are greeted by
the bright sunlight,
and the cool air.

Taking a handy stick
lying by the door
they prop it open,
so they can get back in.

They make their way
down to the penny arcade.

Felix and Wawa
eat the lunch that
Wawa’s mother
has packed for him.

It’s peanut butter
and marshmallow today.

Felix has a quarter
his foster Dad gave him
for his lunch.

They are both experts at pinball,
and the quarter lasts them
until dismissal time.

They sneak back into the school,
just in time to check out
and go home.

It’s been a good day, wisely spent.

Bobby

A day well spent. This reminded me of the time I caught my daughter flattening pennies on the curb with a hammer. When I asked her what she was doing she said she was making them the size of quarters and selling them to the teenage boys in the neighborhood, three for a quarter, to use at the arcade. She was a bit of a business woman from an early age. She was doing quite well financially when she became ill as I always knew she would. Some people just have the knack.

Dear Ida,

It's good that this brought back a good memory for you about your daughter.  Good memories are always, well, good.

Three for a quarter huh?  That sound like a good deal.

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter being ill.  That's a sad thing.

Love Bobby

Dear Tammy,

Thanks for being happy for Felix.  Felix and Wawa had many such adventures, always beating "The Man", who ever that was at the time.  It was fun.

Yo Seoulair,

I'm very pleased you could relate to this.  Fun is always more fun than school.  I used to do it all the time too.

That was one thing I was good at - bunking-off school.  Felix would have enjoyed a day trip to Southend-on-Sea with us.

Thanks Ilsm,

You're a person after my own heart.  Playing pin-ball is always more instructive than school.  It helps develop motor skills.  Lifting the machine up on your toes can be hard on shoes though.

Felix and I will be right over.

Bobby, they sound like typical kids to me.

Mischevious and daring, good post.

Thanks Lindsay,

Felix and Wawa are typical kids in many ways.  I'm pleased that the poem worked for you.
