Summer went by languid
With my thoughts
Stuffed in a tiny suitcase
Fitted with brown leather
And tiny golden clasps
With one word engravings on each
That read “Love” and “Fierce”.
And I tear myself from the
Sticky sweet of my reverie
Only to be reminded of the night
You said let’s go for a swim.
And how I looked over at the moonlight
Casting ghosts on the glass
Of the black lake and I saw your
Silhouette cast aside synthetic skin.
With my—
Pulse quickening
Heart pounding
Mouth dry
Hands sweating
Eyes burning
Knees trembling
Tongue tumbling
Gut aching
I watched your bare shoulders
Caught in the moonbeams
Part the dark glass.
Your lips froze my heart
With the words “Love Fierce”
And I moved fervently to you with
My muscles tense
I stopped and I lifted
Your polka dot dress laying
Like a broken willow on the banks
And all I could do was hesitate and
Stuff your words in my suitcase.
