Felix won’t go near
the Delaware’s shore
at night.

No matter
how tempting it is
during the long hot summer.

He knows not to go there—
no-ser-ee.

There’s always the danger
you might get snatched.

You could be hauled
into some boat—
transported—
and sold
to an Arabian Sheik.

Or you could be taken
by a local pedophile,
and never seen again.

You would simply disappear.

No one would be the wiser,
No one would really care,
the papers,
they won’t tell,
it wouldn’t be news.

The cops?
They’d be glad
to be rid of you.

No one would care,
except your Mom,
and Dad, if you had one.

No kid in their right mind
goes near the Delaware’s shore
at night.

Bobby

Aziza,

Yes, and he's still with us, because he didn't go down to the waterfront alone.

He truth, he and Wawa used to go there and sit by the ancient water pipes made from hollowed out logs.  Those wooden water pipes are still there, as far as I know. They are at the end of Fairmont Avenue, or is it Spring Garden Street.

Felix and Wawa spent a lot of time there, talking about their future, and their past.  Like most kids, they enjoyed lying to each other.

It was a cool place to sit and be alone with a friend.

Roniece,

The river remains a major concern for parents in the hood.  We lose several children a year to the river.  Some by drowning--those you hear about in the papers.  Others are lost by other reasons that you don't hear about.

The river is our lifeblood here in Philadelphia.  It defines us economically, and spiritually.

Yes, Felix did go to the river.  He was almost captured there.  That's another story.

Interesting...Here it would be to snatch up some people in the middle of the night and whisk them away, as unfortunately we have lots of homeless here...James

James,

It is interesting, and terrifying to be snatched, or almost snatched.  However, it's no fun, at least not for the snatchee.  It’s as close as you’ll want to get to hell.

Leave those homeless folks in peace.

Tom,

Fear is not always a bad or unreasonable thing.  Many times it aids in keeping you alive.  Thanks, as always.

Angel4aKing,

I’m pleased that the poem/story got to you.

Thanks for reading, and for the kind words.

The mood of this poem ran throughout `City Boy Stays Alive`  It`s sad to say that children are preyed upon.
