Years somehow seem to edit photographs locked in the mind; Of people that I knew back when and where. Removing imperfections, their enhancements are so kind- I hardly seem to recall they were there. Every lady was a goddess, every friend a work of art- And their memories rest easy on my mind, Now it's real hard to remember just why we had to part... And what on earth I hoped that I would find? The tender words, "I love you," were a joy to hear back then, When I was young and "going down the road-" But I'd leave her sad and crying, just a brother to the wind, The curse of all who've ever rodeoed. Jason and his argonauts and the elusive golden fleece- Could well have understood my youthful quest... Although their search was centered in a land far to the east, And mine was mostly in the great Southwest. So now I live on memories, they're all that I have left- But memories won't warm a bed that's cold... And all the "almost made it's", and "nearly won it all's"- Don't mean a lot now that I'm growing old. |
