Jealousy is such an ugly emotion. an evil, freedom stealing monster. Cunning and persuasive. Dora was literally "a prisoner of love" Her jealous husband controlled every aspect of her lonely life. Jingling his jailer's keys as he professed his undying love. Always searching for an excuse to withdraw trust and exercise control. The irony is... When love finally withered and died and he was alone, his family lost. He had the nerve to ask Why? Dora survived the hell of her first marriage and found happiness, at last, with a secure and gentle man who had no children of his own. And then she left him. Though she did not choose to go. She left him with the gift of gratitude .....and her children whose love, respect and care grace his final years. Ida Werrett I wrote this poem about a friend I worked with when I was young. She finally left her jealous husband after he tried to kill her. I was able to follow her story over the years because our families and friends all know each other. This is so poignant, as I suppose only real life can be... |

Dear Ida, your compassionate, empathetic heart ~ along with your talent for conveying that heart, makes for very compelling reality poetry. God bless all the Doras of this world ~ and the men like her SECOND husband. Loving hug, Linda |

Touching words to tell a tough story, dear Ida! Jealousy indeed can have deleterious effects. The fact that Dora's children are so close to her second husband is an extraordinary gift! love Margherita |

I read this and it reminds me of myself many years ago and perhaps at first I ask why, and of course the answers come as you stare you loneliness and foolish choices in the face...I have always hoped she would find a man that would accept her and love her with no reservations...she remarried about a year later and is still with him...James |

Thank you all for your very kind comments. I wrote this poem (most of it) at Dora's funeral as I sat thinking of our youth and her sad story. Her second husband was an extrordinary man. He is older now and lives with Dora's son and his wife. Ida |
