Tumbling down the darkest passage A rabbits hole I’ve found Twisting turning in the shadows Falling deeper underground Bouncing off the walls I am My body aching from the pain My mind playing tricks on me It’s driving me insane Falling, falling further down I can see a light below I’m almost to the bottom now The passage begins to glow I awoke from my dream and to my dismay I was on the tunnel floor Lying just in front of me Was a large wooden door Slowly I stood and turned around To see what I could see There was nowhere in this room to go But through the one and only entry I looked inside afraid at first Of what may come at me But lo and behold, a giant table Filled with crackers, toast and tea This room was bright containing no one Not a person, beast or thing Until I got closer and began to hear Glasses starting to cling A madman stood at the foot of the table His eye’s were fierce and red He glared at me, up and down A giant hat sat upon his head Just to his right, up in a chair A rabbit sat sipping tea His solid gaze never waning Was directly aimed at me Other creatures size big and small Around the table they sat A cat, a turtle, dog and goat And even a giant rat They appeared from all angles, right out of the air I backed up towards the door Still mesmerized at the creatures I hadn’t noticed before I reached behind me for the exit My fingers grabbed in vain The door was gone, my only escape The blood from my face then drained “Come on over” said the man A grin spread over his face “Join me and my friends!” he said I sensed a false state of grace “Ok” I said, I walked over slowly And sat at the head of the table “Would you like some tea?” he asked “Yes please” my hand’s visibly unstable “How did you get here? Where are you from?” Said the strange man with a grin “I was walking outside and fell down a hole And that’s when all this happened.” “I’m not sure where I am, could you please fill me in?” I asked but not sure if he heard He looked at me questionably But didn’t udder a word Fed up with this nonsense I stood from my chair And turned and walked away No one cared or moved a finger Much less had anything to say I walked and I walked until I came to a clearing I had finally found my way out I could hear some noise a ways away And decided to see what it was about I searched and searched but found no one So tired I laid down I started to close my eyes and then I heard another sound I sat up quickly a looked left and right There was not a single person around Just a single flower near me Was all that I had found I leaned over to smell the plant And it sneezed right in my face Startled I began to back away But it didn’t give me chase Thats when I noticed other flowers Just like the one that sneezed Floating, moving in the wind And looking ever so pleased I said aloud, “What’s going on? This is just all so crazy! The last thing I ever thought would happen Is getting sneezed on by a daisy!” “A daisy!” it exclaimed at me “How dare you compare me to that! All us flowers have names you know The least you can do is ask.” “What are you then?” I asked the flower “How should I have known? Everything here is so new to me I just want to find my way home.” “Then start walking that way,” the flower pointed “Until all the roses turn red. That’s the Kingdom of the Hearts But beware the Queen up ahead!” “But why?” I asked in wonderment “Why the sense of dread?” “If you cross the Queen at all, she’ll scream ‘Off with your head!’” So I quickly stood and went my way I followed the advice of the flower I walked until the roses turned From white to red in an hour I came across three men who were Shaped like playing cards All were worried about their fate In the hands of the Queen’s guards They accidently planted a bush Of roses that were white They were delicately painting each rose Bright red to make it look just right Before they could finish The last and final rose The Queen and her guards Snuck in on their toes “What are you doing?” the Queen yelled “We’re sorry your Majesty” they said The Queen seeing the rose’s painted red screamed “Off with they’re heads!” She turned to me and asked What I was doing there I told her I followed the advice of a flower And that was all she could bare She started to laugh and wouldn’t stop laughing Even her guards started to chuckle At the thought of a flower giving directions A talking honeysuckle? She thought I was lying Waved her arm and said “Take him away and Off with his head!” I ran from the scene without even looking Where I was running too I ran past cards and roses Until I was out of view I came up to a giant tree With a door built into the side I figured, “What the heck, it can’t be worse.” I opened it and tried to hide I walked right into another room Empty except for one thing A looking glass just sitting there What wonders could it bring? I walked up to it and peered right in My room at home was seen This looking glass was no glass at all But a portal for in-between I reached right through just in time The door to the tree fell down The Queen had found me with her guards They’d been searching all around I jumped on through to the other side The confusion on her face Left me feeling whole again That I left her in that place A forewarning to those who like to walk Look before you leap Or a rabbit hole will suck you down To the deepest of the deep Better to die, and sleep The never-waking sleep, than linger on And dare to live when the souls life is gone. Trevor, That my friend was truly amazing, not only is it going in my library, I am going to print it out to savour lingeringly. Living only 4 or 5 miles from Lewis Carrols birthplace, I can relate to this one so much...Thank you for posting this gem.... |
