A Long Hot Summer |

A Long Hot Summer Autumn’s past and winters been And weather wise it’s all serene, As spring’s new growth slips past on gilded wings, New life starts in a wide display While bird songs break at dawn each day And a multitude of sounds that a brilliant Spring-day brings. But then as the months slip slowly by And the sun grows warmer up on high, Especially as the days draw closer to December, It brings again past thoughts of heat, Which to many is quite a treat, But to me it’s the bush-fires that I best remember. For the Australian bush is a potent place, In summer time it keeps apace With the usual rain that suddenly dries up altogether, The hot sun rises up each day, A ball of fire that shows a fierce display, The last green tinge is burnt like burnished leather. Day after day it burns each leaf, A burning orbit without relief And draws each drop of moisture from the soil, Each day the sun’s red-hot rays, Scorch and burn in a hundred ways And slowly leave the summer crops in grave turmoil. As the weeks of January slowly fade, There’s nothing left, not one green blade, As the leaves of bush & shrubs grow limpid in their plight, When February comes it’s worse again, Without a single sign or speck of rain, Or any relief from clouds to give some small respite. The sun shines bright each scorching day, In a stifling, sultry heat-wave foray And hearing the forecast, I think, what a bummer, For there’s no let up from the scorching heat, Each day’s a previous day’s repeat, Just another day in this scorching long hot summer. |

Am I correct in thinking you meant to say orb instead of orbit, LP? So, I guess the hot mouths in Austrailia are Dec. and Jan. Here, our hottest months are usually Aug. and Sept. and I don't like the summer months. Enjoyed your poem as it is pretty much the way I feel. Ida |

Lindsay, I don't think I could handle it - though I would love to experience the heat like that. For maybe five minutes. I am a cold weather person through and through. I really enjoyed this poem and felt like I got to peek into your world. Alison |

Lindsay, I'm with Alison, I love the sun but that I think would be too much for me! We get far too much rain here but at least I can get away from it inside, no getting away from the heat I think. but at least it is a good excuse to break out the tinnies ! Well up to your usual standard....John |

Enjoyed the read, Lindsay, even though I'm pretty much anti heat. Give me winter any time but I do manage to get through hot summers simply because I've got no other option. I have not enjoyed the Australian summers at all and certainly wouldn't like to be anywhere near your bush fires. Devastating things those are in more ways than one. Helen |

Bobby and Ida thanks for picking up my mistake, why I wrote orbit and not orb I'll never know but with all you hawk eyes perusing my poems there's no chance I'll get away with any mistakes, but it is appreciated. Thanks so much for responding. Alison, John and Helen you have also given me a kind response. I don't like the hot weather either but it does make you appreciate, more so, the beautiful days of Autumn that nearly always follows. February is usually our hottest and driest month and I would quite happily forego February altogether. many thanks to all you good friends. God Bless. Lindsay |

It will be summer in Australia soon so I hope that it won`t be as hot this year as you have written. Good writing as usual. |
