Felix comes off the street
about three in the morning.

He can’t get in the house.
Mom’s locked him out.

She’s got a new man in there.

They went to bed,
and she forgot to leave
the door unlocked.

Thank heavens Felix
has a pack of butts to smoke.

He goes back in the alley,
and lights up.

When he’s done
with his last smoke,
he flicks the butt
over the chain link fence,
and goes to sleep.

It’s nice that it’s not too cold.

Author’s note:

The alleys here are about three feet wide.  It’s a crowded hood.  The Felix across the alley always smokes back there, and flicks his butts in my back yard.  For obvious reasons, I can’t bring myself to bother the child about it.

xTr3m3sT,

Thanks buddy for the kind words.

Don't smoke.  Don't get hooked like Felix did.

Dear RDB,

I can only hope that the Felix described here stays well, and sees better days.

LadyTom,

It would be nice if he was safe and sound.  I know he's not safe, and I pray he stays sound.

John,

Yes, it is good it's not raining.  That could have put his butt out.  That would be a serious situation.
