Michael turned the book of prayers Letting his fingertips run across bindings So he could feel the faint traces of her fingertips
He already knew the words
Still turned open to a page He slid the pad of finger along the line Reciting words to himself that had long ago Meant more to him than now
Before he learned the heart held more Than a blind obedience to god Or that the cruelty of man was somewhat offset By the way a woman could love Be loved In the right hands
Soft the vellum rustled As pages turned in an absent way Fell one on top another when his eyes strayed To the small print within the margins Neatly scribed In a fine hand reflecting care The words be put just right and say What was inside the meditations of her prayers
“I know nothing of being loved but what I have learned at his will” he gently traced the string of letters letting his mind go back to where it began as he felt the wind tug at his wings he stood head bowed in a supplication of dreams wondering the how he might have made it more than the nightly descent into her realm where he had touched her as might a man who had wed her to his hand
With a sigh He knelt and slowly shaped a hole with hands Then placed the book tenderly within And sealed it with the dirt he had removed Marking its place with a cairn of stone He plucked two feathers Now grey from age and the fall from grace As came afterwards
And threaded them upon a fine braid of twine Tying one end to the earth Letting them catch free the breeze To flutter as might a mad moth before a flame
He knew he would return Knew where he here marked the grave of words For his memory was long The years meant nothing to him
While she Meant enough to

It isn't accidental that, after a long absence, it should be your work I open first. And oh... what a gift this is!!! I've tried to write of Lucifer... but not one of my efforts have half the power or poignancy of this. *sigh*
Superb work, my friend... this one's going into my library... wrapped in a soft shade of envy... I wish I had written this! *S*
