IT IS ONLY YOU

You put into words what is so difficult for me to articulate,
And it’s all I can do to stop myself
Drowning in our shared thoughts.

Honey drips from your ruthless pen,
Nectar smoothes the harsh words
Flung audaciously from your gentle lips
Words not only sweet but so significant, so real
Frightening in their truth
I feel.

I shiver
In the comforting caress of your shadow
You protect me in your brilliance,
As I slip, unnoticed, beside your blinding light
And laugh, silently, not unkindly
At those who never even see me,
Dazzled as they are by your presence.

But we both know
We need each other
Not to go mad in this uncaring world
Where dissenting minds are not accepted,
Not allowed, only rejected.

Together, we keep each other sane,
Someone to trust, to talk with;
Not to, or at.
Together, we urge the other to higher heights,
And climb daily stronger ambitions
Along the confusing ladder of self-worth.

But really,
It is only you,
Your dark and beautiful mind, your teasing eyes
I need –
All the rest is simply sand upon the windswept shore.
The waves of reality you surge my way
Are all I really need to play
This complex game of life.

I do my best to nurture your visions
And watch carefully your reckless back
As you draw me gently out of my cold shell
With a spider web’s delicacy and quiet strength.
I hope fervently, yet so detached,
That you don’t leave this world and me
Before ’tis time, you see.
