Silkie

Seals called,

“Who?”
      “Who?”

but with no voice she could not answer
and so just watched as evening formed.
Watched from the lee of an upturned boat
orphan stars reveal themselves,
creep across the sky.

So wide it is,
high and full of stars,
in it’s midst a moon within a halo,
silent as a saint that lays a finger on the sea.
A silver path that aims itself at her,
beckoning
just one more step,
another…
and still the seals called,

“Who?”
      “Who?”

In the moon’s wake, answering
her names' unspoken prayer,
they broke the surface,
their doleful eyes,
full of sorrow like a dogs’
met hers
and seemed to say,

“Old woman,
       young at heart.”

The sea lifted then and she was light,
free to swim as a mermaid should,
down shafts of moonlight
until their luminosity slipped away,
quenched three hundred feet below the surface,
so that only the deep,
blue-black sea
remained.

I think this is a wonderful and original fairy tale.  You captivated me and I copied it to my library.  Most good, Pete.  Thank you for sharing.
