They Won't Be Home For Christmas

Another year, American Heroes
Are fighting in a foreign land
And there is still, no end in sight
A part of life, they hadn't planned.

They do their duty without question
And they all stand proud and tall
They are placed there, in harm's way
As they answer, our Country's call.

They'll get by the best they can
And improvise ingenious ways
To find a way to celebrate
The meaning of the Holidays.

Peace on Earth, good will towards men
Is really, kinda hard to do
When all around, there are folks
Whose only wish, is to kill you.

There are far too many families
Who will never again know the joy
That the Christmastime can bring
And cruel, wartime can destroy.

The lucky will return back home
But lives will never be the same
Forever changed in heart and mind
By humankind's unholy game.

They won't be home for Christmas
And sadly, some will never be
But, all of them will share one thing
That's the war Hero's legacy.

So, as you gather 'round the tree
With your loved ones by your side
Think about those, “over there”
While you enjoy, your Yuletide.

Throughout the years of history
Men and women serve to keep us free
All give some ... yes, some give all
We are the Nation of their call

Bravery, Service, Heroism,and Love
Dressed in a military shade of
Red, White and Blue .. L O V E
Proud men and women who now know
Exactly why to them we now owe
Our support, our loyalty, and pride
Forever standing by their side

Merry Christmas to each of them
They know we hold them in vigil

Abe,

The son of a friend of mine died in Iraq last month.  He was her only child (not that having more would diminish the hole in her life).  When I attended her child's memorial I saw some soldiers who have returned with injuries.  I went to each and thanked them for what they have given and continue to give.  They gave their youth and an innocence that will never be regained.

Abe, your poems are so important.  I thank you for writing, sharing and caring.  On behalf of my friend, I thank you for speaking through your abilities as a poet so those soldiers, like her son, will never be forgotten.

Merry Christmas, Abe.  And my thoughts are with all those who are far from their homes, serving for all of us.

this fine 'write' mentioned:

"our Country's call(!)"...

would that they were really fighting and dying for a fully necessary,
honorable, and truly justifiable 'call' (such as was assuredly the case
in W.W.II) from this country, or (real) 'Democracy' (as it once existed
here), or in genuine 'service' to all humanity...instead of the petty, ruthless,
self-referential, self-righteous and false-premise based expectations of lying
political demagogues with megalomaniacal tendencies!

serious applause for this penning!

Del, I don't have anyone over there and thank God but I do wish all the soldiers could be home now as I wished they could be home years ago...if it were me, I'd be in jail for refusing to go at all, but I do understand the need to fight the good fight...

it makes me sad that it has to be this way...I'm against war...life is hard enough without adding to it needlessly

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, good to read you
