"stuttering intelligence"

I have a lot of trouble reading poetry.
no.  that’s a lie.  I read a lot of poetry.
I just have trouble understanding it.
I probably own enough poetry anthologies
to provide the materials for some poor artist
to paper-mache the statue of liberty.
but most of them don’t really “sink in” with me.
I wasn’t trained to think in terms outside of tv.
and I’m convinced that it’s because
I grew up watching Garfield.  damn that cat.

damn him to hell.  oftentimes, while pretending I’ve
made up some of the time I spent scoffing at history books,
I wish that some adult would have sat
me down and explained to me how important
knowledge is – how, without knowledge, you
are doomed to jog around lakes having no
idea what monsters lie beneath the surface, or be forever conned
into buying dollar store statues of jesus, while
the lord is sitting in a library, sipping wine and
reading books by Charles Baudelaire.

if anybody reading this ever has children,
don’t allow them to be stupid, like I was.
don’t allow them to put forth their energy into
aping television shows and trying – so hard! –
to recreate the movies in their lives.  no, you push
them to create and to create and to create.
you push them to plant seeds and paint their walls
and write poems and investigate and turn over rocks

until the earth is one big gaping hole
full of truth and fingernails.

My daughter writes.
My oldest son plays guitar.
My youngest son is a computer game genius.

Artistic expression and intellectual growth is different for everyone.  You have to find it for yourself.

Enjoyed your artistic expression.

But I love Garfield! He has so much life-truth in him.  If I could write poetry that would be as evocative as one panel of him on a Monday morning, I would be content.

Welcome to Passions.
This is outstanding, and I tend to think your experiences support keen intellect...as you were able to verse something as yet unapproached!

I grew up reading .. poetry was a huge part of my parent's life.  I never seemed to 'get it'.  I have studied it, read it, enjoyed it and still feel so inadequate in my knowledge of poetry.  Guess that is just how it is for some of us.

But, I don't need to be an expert to enjoy it - reading it and writing it.  I just read it out loud and savor the words and beauty.

I like the way you think! ~ and the way that you express what you think!

I got a chuckle out of the beginning of your poem when you were writing about not understanding what some poems are about. ~ Me too! I cannot tell you how many times that I have bravely been the first replier to a poem ~ only to find out later that I was waaaaay off the mark.

~ AMEN!!! AMEN!!! AMEN!!!

~ oh, and you most assuredly are not stupid! If I am wrong, then I must like stupid people's writing!

Love & Light ~ and a big hug!
