What is happiness, really?

Is happiness another delusion of our needy hearts

Is it that one moment we hold so closely frozen it time

Those words, that we longed to hear for so long

That one touch that makes our heart skip a beat

A caress that takes our breath away

Can it be that one moment, when you actually feel connected

Where hearts, beat as one… and everything else doesn't exists..

Is it the wind against your face, caressing you

The sound trees make, when they sway to the rhythm of the wind

The smell of a flower, the sound of kids laughter

A simple gesture to show you care…

What is happiness, really?

A combination of all….

Can we actually say that we are completely happy

Or is it just in spurs?

Will closing your eyes

bring back the memory of those happy moments

What if they don't exist..

What then?

I have come to realize that happiness is a temporary state of mind.

A fraction of a moment, where time stands still riding on a cloud

Wishing that it would last forever, but it slowly fades way

Until that next moment…..

Could it be those moments that keeps us whole, sane and with hope?

Happiness, is it lived a day at a time?

Is it unpredictable like everything else in life..

Do we make our own bed of happiness with fantasy and dreams

Ignoring reality…

What is happiness, really?

Do we really know?

Such a great poem and such a great topic. I've asked myself this question so many times.

Mind provkeing poem,
for I have pondered the same thoughts
as you,
Happiness to me is almost loosing
your life, just in time to realize,
having a breath, another day,
to love and live,
I watch sad movies, to wake me up,
from the sleep I walk in,
allowing me to see the truth,
to appreciate what I had all along,
forgetting it was there,
forgetting becomes a cloud,
covering our minds eyes to see,
the media, everything we have ever known,
implants in our brain, for better, for more,
this I believe to be the cloud, we believe the lies, of more is better, when less is actually more...

From the top poems just posted seems
our poets here are in some deep thought tonight..is it the moon?

Think of a rainbow.....If there was one every day would it be so wonderous?

To be in a state of "happiness" each and every day would make it meaningless..JMO.

I Like your pondering and it is well expressed. I find a walk in the woods, seeing that off road little violet peeking out from among some weeds; the unexpected call of a bird in flight; a cobweb clothed in  glistening dew in odd places; a baby's tiny toes; a baby's laugh; any of these things and many many more, bring happiness to fore. Happiness is indeed a state of mind and we can control it better than we realize. again jmo. "late"

Hi -- just curious as to what makes you think this is a poem?  Absolutely nothing wrong with your sincere inquiry and use of language, but it strikes me as the first paragraph of an interesting essay.

This is not nasty.  I'm interested in your notion of poetics.  You're obviously talented!

Best, Jim

How is it that after your heart is ripped out, you feel so much?

Enjoyed your poem very much.  Happiness to me is waking each day with a gift of a breath from God and knowing that it is just that, a Gift.  Lisa

happiness is reading your thoughts,
knowing someone still has a heart,
concern for the world!

for the world to put their priorities
in order!

I'll take all of the above ~ and certainly will make me happy!

Whatever happiness comes my way, I hold on to it and treasure it. Those memories come in handy when the happiness meter starts to drop.

Enjoyed your thoughts!

Be happy!

Loving hug,

As a frustrated judge once said of a different subject altogether...."I know it when I see it."

I came for the title, and happily stayed for the poem -- which is the whole idea, isn't it? Thank you!

a thoughtful and thought-provoking 'write!'

H.D. Thoreau stated, in essence...that 'in wildness lies the salvation of the world'...
'happiness' harbors there as well:

(In that)  "wind against your face, caressing you

The sound trees make, when they sway to the rhythm of the wind" ...etc.

AND:

"Ignoring reality…"....a Fine IDEA!!...'Reality' is only for those who lack 'imagination!'

applause!!

I think real happiness is having a loving

faithful partner, a loving family and being contented with what you have. Happiness is something that every one strives for but sadly not every one succeeds. well written poem. thank you.
