His Mother’s Son – A Soldier

He was twenty-four
and had only been married
for a year or so.
He sang in three high school choirs
because his teacher said his voice
soared into the clouds.
He was a hockey player
and his Mother’s only son.
He loved the cold
and he loved the snow.
He loved to go into the woods
where no one would go.
He drove fast snowmobiles
and he had dreams.
He had dreams that he never shared.
He made people laugh
with funny faces and silly stories.

He was a soldier
and he was killed in November of 2007
by an IED in a country
he never got to visit.

Yes, James, sadly it is true.

Thank you for reading and caring.

(Point for clarification - he was not my son.  He was America's son -- and the son of a woman I know)

Yes, Margherita - your words are sad and true.

May we always remember that these people may have just been starting their lives.  We are losing children, somee not even old enough to vote - some not old enough to drink.  Some have never left home before joining the military.

They are sons and daughters.

May we never forget that.

Your poem is hitting home with far more
mothers, brothers, sisters, fathers, cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and grandparents, than we would have wished for...

in this day and age.

Thankfully, the honor of our nation, the sense of duty, that goes on in our young men and women. I do not want any of them lost, ever. It is a choice they are free to make; God bless them.

Alison, I share with you this story of Sgt. Gebhardt.  You may have seen it.

Sometimes, I believe this is one of the reasons we are there, in whole, and in part.

We do make a difference.

I pray for you, and and for all of the families that see their children off to any war. I also pray for all of the families that go to work any day of the week, and are suddenly sidelined by evil of any kind.

Once we realize we are not victims, but achievers...in any way, at any level...that is when we will become strong once again. Do not listen to the detractors...listen to that inner spirit of yours.

Please let your friend know, that her son is a hero in my mind. Always.

This is the bitter part of war that is so
terrible and causes so much heartache.  So
many young and vibrant souls lost in the
bat of an eye....gone, never to be anything
more than just a memory....so tragic.

Alison, I am so sorry to hear of your personal loss and feel great sorrow for those he left behind.  I am here at For Leonard Wood, MO, visiting my son and his battle buddies this weekend.  I want to cry every time I leave the base because I know so many of these young people's lives will be irreversibly altered by war and their families and friends will lose a part of that person (if not the whole God forbid) that can never be recovered.  They are so idealistic and high spirited.  God bless the all.  *hugs*  ....jo

Such is the irony of this world that nations are "FIGHTING for world peace..."
My question is why are they fighting???
People get destroyed in wars but still we are FIGHTING for world peace ...
May a little sense prevail in our world leaders and they understand that
"Conquer the angry man by peace,
The miser by generosity,
The liar by truth,
And the violent by peace...."
Truly a very well written poem,SUPERB!!!!!!

Thank you all.

This poem is about people, young people - the Why's are left for us to ponder and for politicians to manipulate.

I hope that we have learned not to question those who are going about their days, doing their duty.  Without soldiers, our lives would not be what they are today.

I don't know the WHY'S - I know that I see young people every day in uniform - and I'll save MY Why's for those who should have the answers.

And I will hug and shake the hands and thank those who are actually serving.

aziza,

I hardly know what to say, but felt I should respond.  I think your post prior to this, explains my feelings.

You've reflected well on a perplexing and sad situation.  You expressed it well.
